The 1 Percent in Support of the 99 Percent

Not just the 99 percent is waking up. The movement to build an economy that works for everyone is enlisting allies within the 1 percent.

The good news is there are people in the 1 percent who support the aspirations of the 99 percent. As mentioned earlier, the 1 percent is by no means a monolithic group. We’ve talked about the rule riggers, organized segments of the 1 percent that have teamed up with Wall Street leaders of the corporate 1 percent to use their power to preserve and expand their privileges. But not everyone in the 1 percent backs this program.

Polls indicate, for example, that over 65 percent of people in the 1 percent agree with the concerns of the 99 percent and believe they should pay more taxes. They recognize that the tax system is out of balance and that they’ve gotten generous tax breaks over the last decade.
